Bar owners oriented on new child labor law
by
Jazmin O. Cinco (DOLE-RO9)

Volume V, Number I, June 2005 Issue

Zamboanga City – DOLE Region No. IX conducted an orientation on R.A. No. 9231 for 60 operators and managers of KTVs, beerhouses, nightclubs, bars, massage parlors, and barangay leaders on 16 September 2004 at the DOLE WODP Training Center in Tumaga.

This orientation was conducted to increase awareness and understanding of the new laws and other related legal policies governing child labor in the protection and welfare of the children.

Recently, the authorities raided various entertainment establishments in Zamboanga City to ensure the enforcement of the new laws on Republic Act No. 9231 and No. 9208 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003).

Republic Act No. 9231 provides for the elimination of the worst forms of child labor and affords stronger protection for the working child.  This manifests the government’s strong commitment to curb illegal human trade practices by further amending Republic Act No. 7610, otherwise known as the “Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.”

After the reorientation, the owners, managers, and barangay leaders promised not to hire minors, and comply with laws and policies to promote and protect children’s rights, welfare, and development.
