As
we inch further to the full realization of globalization,
multilateral trade negotiations are undertaken by members
of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to achieve a
progressively higher level of trade liberalization,
especially in the area of trade in services.
However, political, social, economic and legal
barriers hamper the pursuit for greater liberalization
among member-economies.
Environmental setbacks, such as the El Niño and El
Niña phenomena, likewise, brought forth serious damage to
developing countries, which may have strengthened their
sentiments against further liberalization.
To
mitigate the antagonism and protectionism among the
gravely affected countries, this paper recommends that
they first put their respective houses in order and push
for a more level playing field.
Other courses of action include the continuous
negotiation for mutual recognition agreements, and
transparency concerning the conduct of trade in services,
among others.
