An Innovative Approach to Improving Working Conditions in Small Enterprises

Year Completed: 1996

The WISE (Work Improvement in Small Enterprises) program is an innovative, low-cost, and participatory training approach for entrepreneurs and managers of small enterprises.  It aims to increase productivity through the improvement of working conditions.  The introduction of innovations in working conditions advances the cause of both employers and employees.  For employers, productivity and profits are essential factors.  For employees, on the other hand, it is the promotion of their health and safety as well as economic security.

The WISE program introduces low-cost physical improvement under eight technical areas:  materials storage and handling, workstation design, lighting, productive machine safety, control of hazardous substances, work premises, welfare facilities, and work organization.

While the paper discusses these areas in length, it also raises some problems met by the owners and/ or managers of small and medium enterprises.
