Better Harmonization of Work and Family Responsibilities

Year Completed: 1996
[Published in Monograph Series No. 8]

The onset of industrialization paves the way for women to join men in the world of work – widening their horizons beyond the confines of the household to exercise their skills and intellectual prowess.  Industrialization begets the so-called “double load,” causing difficulties in juggling home and career.

The paper raises possible means of achieving better harmonization of work and family responsibilities in the Philippines.  It highlights some of the efforts made to ease the situation of working families in the country by way of statutory rights and/ or provisions in the collective bargaining arena between employers and employees.  It also calls for the ratification of ILO Convention No. 156 which promotes equal opportunities and treatment for men and women workers with family responsibilities.
