Notwithstanding the employment opportunities and economic
lifeline that overseas employment brings to thousands of
Filipino workers, the exploitative terms and conditions of
work among female migrant workers have become an
increasing source of public concern.
The paper notes an alarming increase in the incidence of
sexual assaults/ abuses, maltreatment, and to some extent,
the number of death cases among female OFWs.
The paper also presents possible means of
minimizing the perils that migrant women workers encounter
in their respective workplaces.
Some
of the remedies mentioned are:
the creation of support mechanisms such as the
orientation of women workers on the culture of the host
country, and reinforcement and recognition of existing
treaties and bilateral agreements on the protection of
women workers, among others.
