Philippine Government Responses to International Conventions on Social Security

Year Completed: 1996

Filipino workers have a strong need for social security.  The structural adjustment measures  which must be undertaken to catch up with other economies tend to make workers more vulnerable to socio-economic problems.

The paper identifies several measures undertaken by government to improve the existing social security system in the country.  Among these are:  compliance with ILO Conventions on social security, the adoption of international standards on the coverage of social security protection, and the initiation of bilateral agreements on the protection of Filipino workers abroad.

The study concludes that social security is an area which deserves continuous attention from both government and the private sector.
